The Bihar electricity rate hike has sparked a political controversy in the state. Opposition leader Tejashwi Yadav criticised Chief Minister Nitish Kumar and the BJP over the new electricity tariff rules. He accused the government of betraying people after promising relief during elections.
Speaking about the Bihar electricity rate hike, Yadav said the government had promised free electricity up to 125 units but introduced higher charges only a few months later. He claimed the ruling alliance misled voters and is now putting extra financial pressure on ordinary consumers.
Under the new system approved by the state electricity regulator, power tariffs will depend on the time of usage. Electricity used during evening peak hours will cost more, while daytime and late-night usage will be cheaper. The rule will mainly apply to consumers using smart prepaid meters.
Yadav also alleged that the state treasury is empty and warned that such decisions could increase the financial burden on people in the coming years.
