Bihar Grand Alliance Rift Over Land Report

Bihar political clash over Bandopadhyay Committee report and land reforms

The Grand Alliance in Bihar is facing a major clash ahead of the 2025 Assembly elections. The key phrase in this debate is Bandopadhyay Committee report. Congress and RJD, led by Rahul Gandhi and Tejashwi Yadav, oppose its inclusion in the joint manifesto. The Left parties—CPI, CPM, and CPI(ML)—are strongly demanding it.

The report, prepared in 2008, suggested giving land rights to sharecroppers, distributing government land to the poor, fixing a landholding limit, and blocking corporate entry into farming. The Left has pushed for these reforms for years, but no government has acted.

The manifesto committee of the Grand Alliance remains divided. The biggest clash is over this land reform promise. Since no agreement was reached, Tejashwi Yadav’s Coordination Committee will take the final call.

The Bandopadhyay Committee report has once again become a flashpoint. How leaders handle it may shape Bihar’s politics in the coming elections.
