Bihar Opposition Deadlock Persists as Poll Deadline Nears
With the October 17 nomination deadline for the first phase of Bihar Assembly elections fast approaching, the Mahagathbandhan (Grand Alliance) remains locked in a seat-sharing tussle. The Congress is demanding at least 65 seats, asserting its national presence and past performances. However, its key ally, the Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD), is unwilling to concede more than 55, arguing that it is the dominant force in the alliance.
The standoff has delayed candidate announcements, raising concerns about coordination and campaign preparation. Smaller allies like the Left parties are also awaiting clarity, adding to the alliance’s internal pressure. Meanwhile, the BJP-led NDA has largely finalised its seat-sharing, gaining a head start in campaigning. If unresolved soon, the deadlock could damage the Mahagathbandhan’s prospects, especially in key constituencies. Leaders from both sides are expected to hold last-minute talks to break the impasse before the nomination window closes.
