Bihar’s Political Past and Present: A Journey from Glory to Struggle

Bihar’s Political Past and Present

Once a cradle of ancient civilization, Bihar’s political past and present tell a story of lost glory and enduring struggle. From the Vedic era’s Videha, Anga, Magadha, and Vajji republics to the world’s first democracy in Vaishali, Bihar once symbolized wisdom and power.

Modern Bihar took shape on March 22, 1912, when it was separated from Bengal. Despite its proud history, today’s Bihar faces deep challenges. It has seen 17 assembly elections, and as the 18th approaches, questions of progress persist.

Thirty-four leaders have held the Chief Minister’s post, yet millions still fight for basic needs—education, health, and jobs. The literacy rate stands at 61.8%, the lowest in India. Per capita income is about ₹55,000, far below the national average.

Caste politics, corruption, and poor governance continue to dominate. Once a land of Nalanda and wisdom, Bihar now struggles with inequality, weak infrastructure, and political manipulation. The coming election will decide not just leadership—but whether Bihar can reclaim its lost glory.
