Varanasi, January 2, 2026: BJP corporator’s son slaps a sub-inspector during an altercation in Uttar Pradesh’s Varanasi, triggering public outrage on Thursday evening. The incident took place in the Chowk police station area, police officials said.
According to Deputy Commissioner of Police Gaurav Banswal, the accused, Himanshu Srivastava, slapped the on-duty sub-inspector during a confrontation. Locals present at the spot reacted immediately and beat up Himanshu before police intervened. The BJP corporator’s son slaps episode quickly spread across the area, drawing a crowd.
Police identified Himanshu Srivastava as the son of BJP corporator Brijesh Chandra Srivastava from Hukulganj. Officers registered a case against him under relevant sections of the law. DCP Banswal confirmed that authorities are sending the accused to jail.
Officials said the police acted swiftly to restore order and prevent further escalation. Senior officers reached the spot and ensured the safety of the injured sub-inspector. The officer did not suffer serious injuries, police added.
The incident has sparked strong reactions in the city. Many residents demanded strict action, saying no one stands above the law. Police reiterated their commitment to impartial action, regardless of political connections.
Authorities continue to investigate the matter and have warned against interference with law enforcement duties.
