Bondi Beach hero tackles gunman during Sydney Hanukkah attack

Bondi Beach

Australians on Sunday hailed a man as a hero after he tackled a gunman during a mass shooting at Sydney’s Bondi Beach. The attack was the deadliest in Australia in recent years. A widely shared video showed the unarmed man confronting the shooter as gunfire continued, an act believed to have saved many lives.

The footage shows the man hiding behind parked cars before charging the gunman from behind. He grabbed him by the neck, pulled away the rifle, and forced him to the ground. He then pointed the weapon back at the attacker to prevent further shooting.

The man was identified as 43-year-old Ahmed al Ahmed, a fruit seller. He reportedly suffered two gunshot wounds and was taken to hospital. His cousin, Mustapha, told local media Ahmed was awaiting surgery. He said the family hoped for his recovery and described him as a hero.

Prime Minister Anthony Albanese also praised Ahmed’s bravery. Online users widely applauded his quick thinking and courage. Reports said Ahmed had no weapons training and was walking past when he intervened.

Police confirmed at least 15 people died in the attack, which targeted a Jewish Hanukkah event. A 50-year-old father, Sajid Akram, was killed at the scene. His 24-year-old son, Naveed Akram, remains in critical condition. Authorities have declared the shooting a terrorist incident.
