In a historic step for the Indian diaspora, California has officially declared Diwali a state holiday, becoming the third U.S. state to recognise the Festival of Lights. Governor Gavin Newsom signed Assembly Bill 268, introduced by Assembly members Ash Kalra and Dr. Darshana Patel.
Kalra said California is home to the largest Indian American population in the country, and this decision will both uplift Diwali’s message and introduce it to many across the state. He described Diwali as a festival that brings people together with goodwill, peace, and renewal.
Earlier, Pennsylvania became the first state to make Diwali a holiday in 2024, followed by Connecticut. In New York City, Diwali is already an official school holiday.
Community leaders welcomed California’s move. Indiaspora, a nonprofit organisation, called it a milestone in cultural inclusion, praising Indian Americans for shaping California’s growth in technology, economy, arts, and public service. Founder MR Rangaswami said the recognition shows diversity is truly a strength.
Silicon Valley entrepreneur Ajay Bhutoria called the announcement a “radiant milestone.” He noted that granting employees time off allows families to fully celebrate traditions like lighting Diyas, making Rangoli, and sharing stories of hope and unity.
