Step by step, health experts say 20 minutes of daily walking can make a meaningful difference to healthy aging. For senior citizens, this simple routine offers physical, mental, and emotional benefits without placing excessive strain on the body.

Doctors explain that walking for 20 minutes helps improve heart health, balance, and joint mobility. It also supports muscle strength, which reduces the risk of falls — a major concern among older adults. Unlike high-impact workouts, walking is gentle and adaptable to individual fitness levels.

Walking also benefits mental well-being. Regular movement boosts blood flow to the brain, improves mood, and helps manage stress. Experts say consistency matters more than speed, especially for seniors just starting out.

To stay safe, doctors advise warming up before walking and choosing flat, familiar routes. Supportive footwear, proper hydration, and avoiding extreme weather conditions are also important. Those with medical conditions should consult a doctor before starting a new routine.

Step by step, building a habit around 20 minutes of walking can support independence and overall quality of life. When done with care and regularity, walking remains one of the safest and most effective exercises for healthy aging.

The new year 2026 has begun with several major rule changes that directly impact daily life across India. From banking and taxes to digital services and welfare schemes, at least ten key updates took effect on January 1.

The government has made PAN-Aadhaar linking mandatory. PAN cards not linked by December 31, 2025 now stand inoperative. This affects tax filing, refunds, banking, and government benefits. Late linking may attract a ₹1,000 penalty.

The Income Tax Department has started preparations for new income tax return forms. These forms will seek more transaction details to improve accuracy and compliance. Tax planning has gained urgency as the government prepares a new tax law from April 2026.

Credit scores will now update weekly instead of monthly. Timely EMI payments will reflect faster, while delays may impact scores immediately.

Farmers seeking PM-Kisan benefits now need a Farmer ID in several states. Missing IDs may delay the ₹6,000 annual payment.

Banks have begun reviewing FD and loan interest rates. Commercial LPG prices rose by ₹111, while domestic LPG rates stayed unchanged.

Messaging apps have tightened rules to curb fraud. Phone numbers must remain active for 90 days.

These changes make preparation essential to avoid disruption and penalties.

Diabetes cases are rapidly rising in Punjab, with one out of every ten residents affected. Poor dietary habits and reduced physical activity are the primary causes. In the financial year 2025–26, a total of 25.95 lakh people were screened, out of which 2.40 lakh were diagnosed with diabetes, according to the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare.

The report highlights that negligence toward diet and overall health is significantly impacting even the younger population. The data shows a continuous rise: 86,744 cases were detected in 2023–24, while 2.28 lakh cases were reported in 2024–25.

Under the National Health Mission (NHM), technical and financial support is provided to all states for disease prevention, including infrastructure development, screening, and timely treatment. Currently, 770 district clinics, 233 cardiac care units, and 6,410 community health centre clinics are operational.

Neighbouring states show similar concerns. Haryana screened 31.04 lakh people this year, finding over 2.11 lakh diabetic patients. Himachal Pradesh recorded 68,498 cases from 15.62 lakh screenings.

Common causes include tobacco and alcohol use, obesity, sedentary lifestyle, high sugar and processed foods, stress, and high blood pressure. Untreated diabetes can lead to heart disease, kidney issues, vision problems, nerve damage, and weakened blood vessels.

They assured that the SCL will remain government-run and will not be privatised. The SCL Mohali upgrade will strengthen India’s semiconductor ecosystem and innovation capacity.

Vaishnaw explained that the investment will modernise production lines, introduce advanced tools, and increase wafer fabrication capacity nearly 100 times. Moreover, the upgrade will make SCL a national hub for students, researchers, and start-ups. He said the facility will support strategic sectors and defence technology.

The Centre has requested 25 acres of adjoining land from the Punjab Government for expansion. Vaishnaw added that faster land allocation will accelerate the SCL Mohali upgrade. He emphasised that the laboratory will continue to lead in semiconductor research and training.

During the visit, the ministers handed over 28 student-designed semiconductor chips fabricated under the Chips to Start-up programme. With this, the total number of student-designed chips produced at SCL reached 56. Vaishnaw noted that this demonstrates SCL’s role in nurturing India’s semiconductor talent.

Bittu said the Centre aims to develop Mohali into a national semiconductor zone. He added that students, researchers, and global partners will collaborate at the facility. Furthermore, the upgrade will reduce India’s dependence on imported chips. The ministers highlighted that the Prime Minister has set a clear roadmap under the India Semiconductor Mission to make India a global competitor in electronics.

While West Bengal has recently been in the headlines over the ongoing political row surrounding the SIR (voter list revision), Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee’s government has registered a remarkable success in a completely different area. According to the India Tourism Data Compendium 2025, released by the Ministry of Tourism, West Bengal has become the second most-preferred Indian state for foreign tourists, standing only behind Maharashtra.

The report highlights that West Bengal attracted 31 lakh foreign tourists in 2024, marking a 14.8% increase compared to the 27 lakh foreign visitors in 2023. The growth momentum continued strongly in 2025 as well, with the state welcoming 27.11 lakh foreign tourists between January and June alone, setting the stage for a new all-time record.

What makes the achievement more striking is that the top tourist-producing countries—USA (80,647), Russia (79,758), UK (77,792), and Italy (64,225)—do not have direct flight connectivity to Kolkata. Despite this, foreign tourist inflow continues to surge, reflecting West Bengal’s growing global appeal in culture, heritage, wildlife, and culinary tourism.

The increase in foreign arrivals has translated into significant revenue for the state, with tourism becoming one of the strongest contributors to the state exchequer. The report places Bengal ahead of major tourism-heavy states like Rajasthan, Gujarat, and Uttar Pradesh, marking a major achievement for the Mamata Banerjee administration.

Finance Minister Harpal Singh Cheema confirmed the release during a press conference at Punjab Bhawan. Punjab Government releases ₹213 crore to Panchayats based on proposals vetted by committees of MLAs and officials, ensuring proper utilization of the funds.

The ‘Rangla Punjab Scheme,’ announced in this year’s budget under Chief Minister Bhagwant Singh Mann, has a total allocation of ₹585 crore. Each Assembly constituency will receive ₹5 crore for development works. Cheema highlighted that ₹334 crore had already been released earlier to Panchayats, Zila Parishads, and Panchayat Samitis, underlining the government’s commitment to consistent progress.

The Finance Minister also emphasized ongoing infrastructure projects across the state. The plan includes building over 3,000 stadiums for youth and constructing 19,000 kilometers of new roads. Cheema stressed that unlike previous governments, the AAP administration is delivering on promises steadily throughout its tenure, not reserving initiatives for the last year.

With the first installment now disbursed, local bodies can accelerate development activities, ranging from road repairs to sports and community facilities. The government aims to make visible improvements in every corner of Punjab, fulfilling its vision of a ‘Rangla Punjab’ for all citizens.

Dharwad Zilla Panchayat Chief Executive Officer Bhuvanesh Patil urged officials to speed up the multi-village drinking water project in the district. He stressed this point twice as he reviewed the progress and told teams to complete every stage within the planned deadline. He said the drinking water project plays a crucial role in improving daily life in rural communities.

The district is developing a large-scale plan to supply drinking water to 388 villages. The administration chose the DBOT (Design, Build, Operate, Transfer) model to make the project efficient and transparent. Patil explained that this model helps teams maintain quality, reduce delays, and keep long-term operations smooth.

During the meeting, he asked engineers and contractors to remove bottlenecks quickly. He also instructed field staff to monitor each site regularly and report issues before they slow down the schedule. Patil added that advanced planning and timely coordination will help villages receive reliable drinking water without interruptions.

He noted that the project supports health, education, and economic activity across the district. Clean water, he said, directly contributes to better living standards and reduces the pressure on families who currently depend on irregular sources.

Patil concluded that Dharwad must treat this project as a top priority and deliver it with accuracy and urgency.
