A shocking case of fraud has surfaced at PGI Chandigarh, where a man from Himachal Pradesh lost ₹50,000 while visiting for his wife’s treatment. The victim, Joginder Singh from Bilaspur, had come to Chandigarh for his wife’s breast cancer care. She is undergoing treatment at PGI’s New OPD.

The incident occurred on February 16 around 3:15 pm. Singh went to withdraw cash from a Punjab National Bank ATM inside the New OPD complex. He withdrew ₹5,000 successfully. At that moment, a masked man approached him and claimed the debit card was stuck inside the machine. The accused asked Singh to re-enter the PIN.

Trusting the stranger, Singh followed the instructions. The man then handed him a debit card, claiming it belonged to Singh. The victim left the ATM unaware of the swap. About ten minutes later, Singh received multiple transaction alerts. Five withdrawals of ₹10,000 each drained ₹50,000 from his account.

On checking the card, Singh noticed another person’s name printed on it. He immediately contacted the bank and blocked his card. Sector-11 police registered a case against an unknown accused and started an investigation. Police teams are scanning nearby CCTV footage to identify the suspect. The incident has raised fresh concerns over patient safety and ATM security in hospital premises.

Union Home Minister Amit Shah made these remarks on Saturday, January 31, 2026, while addressing a BJP workers’ meeting in Barrackpore, North 24 Parganas.

Targeting the Mamata Banerjee-led Trinamool Congress (TMC), Mr. Shah accused the State government of sheltering infiltrators for electoral gains. He said infiltration through Bengal’s borders has turned into a serious national security concern. According to him, the TMC government has failed to provide land to the Border Security Force for fencing despite court orders, as infiltrators serve as its vote bank.

Amit Shah slams TMC over infiltration by alleging that the State administration and police allow illegal migrants to move across the country using fake documents. He also linked corruption to governance failures, citing the recent fire at a momo factory in Anandapur near Kolkata. He claimed the incident reflected systemic corruption and questioned why the factory owners had not been arrested.

The Home Minister further accused the TMC of intimidating Matua and Namasudra communities but assured them of protection under a BJP government. Calling corruption “institutionalised,” he challenged Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee to deny tickets to tainted leaders.

Mr. Shah predicted that the BJP would secure over 50% vote share and win a massive majority in the upcoming Assembly elections. He urged voters to remove the TMC and establish what he called a nationalist and patriotic government in Bengal.

The death of Ajit Pawar has created uncertainty within the Nationalist Congress Party (NCP). On Friday (January 30, 2026), senior NCP leaders met Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis in Mumbai to discuss the political situation following the tragic incident.

The meeting took place at the Chief Minister’s official residence, Varsha, in south Mumbai. It lasted for nearly one and a half hours. Senior leaders present included Chhagan Bhujbal, NCP national working president Praful Patel, State president Sunil Tatkare, and former minister Dhananjay Munde, sources said.

According to party insiders, the leaders discussed the future course of the NCP after Ajit Pawar’s sudden demise. They also reviewed the impact of his death on the ruling Mahayuti alliance, which includes the BJP, Shiv Sena, and the NCP.

However, neither side issued an official statement after the meeting. As a result, the details of the discussions remain unclear.

Meanwhile, political speculation has intensified. NCP Minister Narhari Zirwal had publicly stated on Thursday (January 29, 2026) that Ajit Pawar’s wife, Sunetra Pawar, should take over as Deputy Chief Minister. Sunetra Pawar currently serves as a Rajya Sabha member. The Chief Minister’s Office has not commented on this suggestion so far.

A close associate of Ajit Pawar revealed that he strongly supported the merger of the two NCP factions. According to the associate, discussions on reunification had reached an advanced stage and could have concluded soon.

Ajit Pawar, aged 66, died in a tragic plane crash on Wednesday (January 28, 2026). The chartered aircraft crashed in Baramati, Pune district, killing Pawar and four others. Leaders and supporters cremated him with full state honours on Thursday.

Ajit Pawar’s death marks a turning point for the NCP and could significantly shape Maharashtra’s political landscape in the coming days.

Congress leader and Leader of the Opposition in the Lok Sabha, Rahul Gandhi, on Friday (January 30, 2026) said that Mahatma Gandhi represents a way of thinking, not just a historical figure. He added that empires and ideologies driven by hatred have tried, and failed, to erase Gandhi’s ideas.

While paying tributes on Martyrs’ Day, Mr. Gandhi described Mahatma Gandhi as the “immortal soul of India.” He said Gandhi’s values continue to guide the nation even decades after his death.

Moreover, Rahul Gandhi said that Gandhi gave India more than Independence. He said Gandhi gave the country a moral foundation. According to him, this foundation rests on the belief that truth is stronger than authority and non-violence is stronger than fear.

In a post on social media platform X, written in Hindi, Mr. Gandhi said that arrogance of power has repeatedly tried to suppress Gandhi’s philosophy. However, he said those efforts have always failed.

He further stated that Gandhi’s way of thinking cannot disappear. He explained that Gandhi lives in the conscience of India and remains deeply rooted in its values.

Meanwhile, Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge also paid homage to the Father of the Nation. He shared lines from a bhajan often sung by Mahatma Gandhi. Mr. Kharge said the path to healing hatred lies in truth, compassion, and non-violence.

Similarly, Congress general secretary Priyanka Gandhi Vadra remembered Gandhi on his death anniversary and paid tribute to his teachings and sacrifices.

Additionally, Congress general secretary (communications) Jairam Ramesh recalled letters written in 1948 by Jawaharlal Nehru and Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel. The letters criticised the activities of the Hindu Mahasabha and the RSS after Gandhi’s assassination. Mr. Ramesh shared excerpts from these letters on social media.

Furthermore, AICC general secretary (organisation) K.C. Venugopal warned against the continued spread of hatred and violence. He said such ideologies threaten Gandhi’s legacy even today. He urged people to remain vigilant and uphold Gandhi’s ideals.

Mahatma Gandhi died on January 30, 1948, after Nathuram Godse assassinated him in Delhi. India observes the day as Martyrs’ Day. The nation remembers Gandhi for his leadership, his commitment to peace, and his lifelong struggle for justice and freedom.

Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge chaired the meetings. Former party chief Rahul Gandhi and AICC general secretary (organisation) K.C. Venugopal also attended the discussions. The leadership stressed unity and coordination at all organisational levels.

During the meetings, leaders discussed the urgent need to strengthen booth-level structures. The party asked State units to speed up the appointment of booth-level agents and improve voter outreach. In addition, leaders raised concerns over alleged irregularities during the final stages of the Special Intensive Revision of electoral rolls.

Moreover, the Congress leadership highlighted the importance of reviving the movement to restore MGNREGA in Rajasthan and Chhattisgarh. Leaders said BJP governments had weakened employment guarantees and delayed wage payments, hurting rural households.

The party also advised leaders to take BJP’s unfulfilled promises directly to the public. According to Congress sources, the focus will remain on rising unemployment, inflation, and shrinking welfare support.

Overall, the leadership called for disciplined teamwork, sustained grassroots engagement, and a clear narrative to challenge the BJP’s political dominance in both States.

Restoration of MGNREGA law became the central issue during President Droupadi Murmu’s address to the joint sitting of Parliament on January 23, 2026. Opposition parties, led by the Congress, protested against the replacement of the Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Act with the VB-G RAM G Act.

Congress leaders said the restoration of MGNREGA law is essential to protect the right to work for rural households. They stressed that MGNREGA remains a rights-based programme that ensures employment security and strengthens grassroots democracy.

The protest followed the President’s reference to the Viksit Bharat – Guarantee for Rozgar and Ajeevika Mission (Gramin) Act, commonly called the VB-G RAM G Act. While treasury benches welcomed the mention with desk-thumping, Opposition members raised slogans demanding a rollback of the new law.

During her address, President Murmu said the VB-G RAM G Act guarantees 125 days of employment. She added that the new framework would curb corruption, reduce leakages, and provide a fresh push to rural development.

Congress general secretary Jairam Ramesh said Opposition parties protested in a dignified manner. He described the repeal of MGNREGA as “bulldozed” and undemocratic. He also said the Opposition would use every constitutional and democratic means to press for restoration.

Opposition leaders argued that MGNREGA empowered panchayats by giving them authority over planning and implementation. They warned that replacing it could weaken local institutions and dilute accountability.

The government, however, defended the new law. It claimed that the VB-G RAM G Act modernises rural employment delivery and improves transparency through tighter monitoring.

Despite these assurances, Opposition parties insist that only the restoration of MGNREGA law can protect rural livelihoods. They maintain that employment guarantees must remain enforceable rights, not policy assurances. The issue is expected to trigger intense debate during the ongoing Budget Session of Parliament.
