Centre Proposes Smartphone Makers Share Source Code to Strengthen Data Security
The Indian government has proposed that smartphone manufacturers provide access to their source code as part of a major security overhaul aimed at protecting user data. The move is intended to bolster cybersecurity in the world’s second-largest smartphone market, which has nearly 750 million mobile users, amid rising cases of online fraud and data breaches.
Officials said sharing the source code with government agencies would allow authorities to detect vulnerabilities, monitor potential security threats, and ensure that devices comply with national data protection standards. The proposal is part of Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s broader push to strengthen digital security and safeguard personal information in an increasingly connected economy.
Industry experts noted that while the plan could improve user safety, smartphone makers may raise concerns about intellectual property and privacy.
