Centre Revokes Ban, 2,100 Sikh Pilgrims Granted Visas to Visit Pakistan Shrines
In a significant development, around 2,100 Sikh pilgrims have been granted visas by the Pakistan High Commission to visit historic gurdwaras across Pakistan, including Nankana Sahib and Panja Sahib, for Guru Nanak Jayanti celebrations. The decision follows the Indian government’s revocation of a recent ban that had halted such pilgrimages, though confusion persists within official circles about who authorized both the suspension and its reversal. The temporary halt had drawn criticism from Sikh organizations and political leaders, who viewed it as an unnecessary restriction on religious travel. While the resumption of the pilgrimage has brought relief to devotees, the Kartarpur Sahib corridor — a key route for cross-border access — remains closed since 2020 due to security and diplomatic concerns. Officials from both sides have indicated that reopening the corridor will depend on further talks and improved bilateral ties.
