Dense fog disrupted flight operations at Shaheed Bhagat Singh International Airport in Chandigarh on Wednesday night. Poor visibility forced authorities to divert incoming flights and cancel several departures to ensure passenger safety.
An IndiGo flight from Delhi, scheduled to land at 9:20 pm, failed to receive landing clearance due to extremely low visibility. The aircraft circled over Chandigarh for some time. When conditions did not improve, officials diverted the flight to Delhi, where it landed around 11 pm.
A similar situation affected an IndiGo flight arriving from Jaipur. The aircraft was due to land at 10:10 pm but faced the same visibility issues. Airport control later diverted the flight to Delhi, where it landed at approximately 11:05 pm.
Fog also disrupted outbound services from Chandigarh. IndiGo flights to Jaipur and Delhi, along with an Air India flight to Delhi, were cancelled due to unsafe weather conditions.
Airport officials said runway visibility dropped well below operational limits during the night. This made safe landing and take-off impossible. Authorities prioritised passenger safety while taking decisions on diversions and cancellations.
Several passengers faced delays and inconvenience due to the sudden weather change. Officials advised travellers to check flight status before leaving for the airport, as foggy conditions may continue to affect operations.
