Chandigarh Administration has intensified its action against illegal settlements, with Sector-29’s J&K Colony now next on the eviction list. Around 110 families living here are set to lose their homes after the Punjab-Haryana High Court dismissed their petition, noting that no valid allotment documents were presented.

The colony traces its roots to 1980, when the Jammu & Kashmir government requested temporary shelter arrangements in Chandigarh for traders visiting to sell dry fruits, shawls and blankets. Small temporary houses were built in Sector-29 for short stays. However, over time, several occupants settled permanently, creating an unauthorized colony.

With the court rejecting the residents’ appeal, the Estate Office is preparing to vacate the houses and bring the land back under administrative control. The affected families, now on the brink of homelessness, await the next steps as eviction orders are expected to be enforced soon.
