A major theft during a wedding ceremony at Kukhraen Bhavan in Chandigarh’s Sector 35 triggered panic after the bride’s mother’s bag containing cash and jewellery was stolen. The baraat had arrived from Haldwani, Uttarakhand.
According to the bride’s mother, she stepped out of Room No. 3 at around 9:25 pm with a gold ring meant for the priest. Though she had locked the cupboard, when she returned at 9:45 pm, it was found open and the bag emptied.
CCTV footage shows two to three men dressed in formal attire entering the venue around 9:35 pm. They broke a window at the back, entered the room, and stole ₹5.5 lakh cash and jewellery worth around ₹4.5 lakh, including 4.5 tola of gold. The thieves were seen fleeing with the bag through the main gate. Police and Crime Branch teams reached the spot and began investigating the gang.
This is the second major theft in Sector 35 within 20 days. Similar incidents have been reported across Chandigarh’s wedding venues, raising questions over police efficiency and security arrangements.
