With the northeast monsoon fast approaching, the Greater Chennai Corporation (GCC) has stepped up preparedness measures to minimize flooding and ensure the safety of residents. Heavy-duty motors, portable pumps, and emergency rescue vehicles have been stationed across low-lying areas identified as highly vulnerable during the rains.
Officials confirmed that over 600 motors and pumps are on standby to tackle waterlogging, particularly in stretches that witnessed severe flooding in recent years. In addition, rescue boats, trucks, and ambulances have been deployed in sensitive zones to enable quick evacuation if necessary.
The GCC is also conducting real-time rainfall monitoring, with control rooms working round-the-clock to coordinate emergency operations. A dedicated team will keep the public updated through social media and helplines. Desilting of stormwater drains and canals has been prioritized to prevent blockages and improve drainage capacity.
To strengthen readiness, the Tamil Nadu State Disaster Response Force has been placed on high alert. Fire and police departments will provide support during emergencies, while medical teams and generators are stocked to handle power disruptions and health risks. Officials have assured that adequate manpower has been assigned to every zone to ensure faster response during heavy downpours.
The administration has also appealed to residents to avoid dumping garbage in drains, as blockages often worsen waterlogging. Citizens have been urged to immediately report emergencies through the 1913 helpline and mobile app services.
Chennai’s preparations come amid warnings that climate change is intensifying rainfall events, making proactive readiness more critical than ever. Authorities expressed confidence that with improved infrastructure, early warnings, and public cooperation, the city can minimize disruptions and avoid a repeat of the devastating floods seen in the past decade.
