Chicago Immigration Raids Spark Gunfire and Rising Protests

Chicago

Tensions flared in Chicago as a man fired at US Border Patrol agents during an immigration enforcement operation on Saturday. The Department of Homeland Security (DHS) confirmed the shooting but said no one was injured.

Chicago police said officers secured the area after reports of gunfire in the city’s Little Village neighborhood. The suspect, driving a black Jeep, remains at large.

The shooting occurred amid protests against ongoing immigration raids. A Reuters witness saw police detain a man following a heated argument with residents. DHS reported that agitators also threw paint cans and bricks at Border Patrol vehicles during the incident.

Federal operations across Chicago and nearby suburbs have sparked widespread anger. On Friday, more than a dozen suburban mothers were arrested outside an immigration detention center in Broadview.

DHS stated the crackdown, part of Trump’s “Operation Midway Blitz,” aims to target undocumented criminals. Since September, federal agents have arrested over 3,000 people, including US citizens and individuals with no criminal record.

As protests grow, community leaders are demanding accountability and questioning the human cost of the immigration raids.
