Children’s Spine Health at Risk in the Digital Age
Increased screen time among children today is leading to a rise in spinal problems. Poor posture while using smartphones, tablets, and laptops causes strain on the neck and back, often called “tech neck.” Spending long hours sitting without breaks weakens muscles that support the spine, increasing the risk of pain and discomfort.
Common symptoms include neck and back pain, muscle stiffness, and difficulty sitting upright. If untreated, these issues can affect children’s overall health and growth.
To prevent spinal problems, experts recommend limiting screen time and encouraging regular physical activity. Teaching children to maintain good posture—sitting upright with screens at eye level and feet on the floor—is essential. Taking frequent breaks using the 20-20-20 rule (every 20 minutes, look at something 20 feet away for 20 seconds) can also reduce strain.
Parents should promote balanced habits to protect their children’s spinal health in the digital era.
