China has accused the United States of showing “double standards” after President Donald Trump announced an additional 100 percent tariff on Chinese goods. The new tariffs, set to begin on November 1, come in response to China’s new export restrictions on rare-earth minerals.
An unnamed spokesperson from China’s Ministry of Commerce said Trump’s comments reflected clear hypocrisy. “The US statement is a typical example of double standards,” the ministry said in an online post.
Trump called China’s actions “extraordinarily aggressive” and also threatened to cancel his upcoming meeting with Chinese President Xi Jinping. The move has further strained relations between the two largest economies in the world.
Beijing accused Washington of escalating economic pressure since September. “These actions have seriously harmed China’s interests and damaged the atmosphere for trade talks,” the commerce ministry stated. It urged the US to engage in dialogue instead of threats.
China warned that repeatedly using high tariffs as leverage would not solve trade issues. The ongoing tensions raise concerns of a deeper trade conflict between the two nations, which could impact global markets.
