Beijing has introduced a new K visa to attract young science and technology professionals from around the world. The move comes as US President Donald Trump’s $100,000 H-1B visa fee sparks confusion and concern among international workers.

China’s Premier Li Qiang signed a decree to amend the rules on foreigners’ entry and exit. The new K visa will take effect from October 1, 2025. It allows holders to enter China for education, cultural exchanges, science and technology work, as well as entrepreneurship and business activities.

Unlike other visas, applicants do not need a domestic employer or invitation. The process will be streamlined, and requirements focus on age, education, and work experience.

Officials said the K visa supports China’s workforce development strategy and promotes international cooperation. It is part of Beijing’s ongoing efforts to simplify visa rules and attract global talent.

China has already seen growing international visits. In the first half of 2025, 38 million foreign trips involved China, up 30% from last year, with 13.6 million visa-free trips, a 54% increase.

With the US making H-1B visas more expensive, many international graduates may now consider China’s K visa as a practical alternative for building their careers.
