China has developed a powerful global missile defence system that can spot missile launches anywhere in the world. Called the “distributed early warning detection big data platform,” it can track up to 1,000 missiles at once, says The South China Morning Post.
The system uses sensors in space, the sea, the air, and on land to detect and study threats. It gathers real-time data like light paths and weapon types to guide quick interception. Scientists from the Nanjing Research Institute of Electronics Technology, part of the People’s Liberation Army (PLA), built and tested the prototype across several detection sites. It now helps the PLA manage and share data more effectively.
The idea of such a shield began in the US decades ago. In 1983, Ronald Reagan proposed the “Star Wars” project. Later, in 2025, Donald Trump launched the $175 billion Golden Dome plan. However, the US system is still under design, while China already has a working model.
China’s progress shows its growing strength in global defence technology and could change the world’s security balance.
