China Venezuela US Tensions Rise as Xi Urges Respect for Sovereignty

China

Chinese President Xi Jinping urged major powers to respect other nations’ chosen development paths, in remarks widely seen as aimed at the United States. He spoke amid growing tensions over Venezuela and Washington’s recent actions, which Beijing strongly criticized.

Xi said the world faces turbulence unseen in a century. He warned that unilateral and coercive behavior harms the international order. The comments were reported by state media after his meeting with Irish Prime Minister Micheál Martin.

China earlier criticized what it described as US attacks on Venezuela. Beijing said all countries must follow international law and the UN Charter. Xi added that major powers should lead by example and avoid interference.

Chinese officials reiterated support for Caracas’ right to pursue economic partnerships without external pressure. Beijing also called for the immediate release of Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro and his wife, describing US actions as unlawful. The statements framed the situation as a violation of international norms.

Venezuela remains a key partner for China. Ties strengthened under former leader Hugo Chávez and continued under Maduro. Cooperation focused on energy, finance, and shared opposition to Western influence in Latin America.

Despite US sanctions, China became a major buyer of Venezuelan oil. It also emerged as a leading investor and lender, providing large oil-backed loans over two decades.
