China’s newest aircraft carrier, the Fujian, successfully launched three types of aircraft using its advanced electromagnetic catapult system, known as EMALS. State media released footage showing the fifth-generation J-35 stealth fighter, the J-15T fighter, and the KJ-600 early warning aircraft taking off.

Experts hailed this as a major breakthrough for China’s carrier program and a milestone in its naval modernization. Only the US Navy’s USS Gerald R Ford currently uses EMALS, giving China a significant leap in capability.

Analyst Carl Schuster, a former US Navy captain, said the Fujian could join the People’s Liberation Army Navy (PLAN) fleet in just a few weeks. Future tests will check its integration with China’s Air Force and Rocket Force.

EMALS allows heavier aircraft and bigger weapon loads than older carriers with ski-jump ramps, giving the Fujian a longer strike range. This enhances China’s “blue-water” capabilities, letting the carrier operate further from home waters. Unlike US carriers, the Fujian uses conventional fuel, so it needs refueling at sea or port.

The tests come as a US Congressional delegation visits Beijing to boost military communication. US Rep. Adam Smith emphasized the need for dialogue to prevent miscalculations, especially as AI, drones, and space capabilities grow rapidly.

The Fujian marks a major step in China’s naval power expansion.
