Cleaning of Yamuna Is People’s Movement: CM Gupta

CM Gupta says cleaning of Yamuna is a people’s movement

Cleaning of Yamuna movement needs active participation from citizens to achieve lasting results, Chief Minister Gupta said on Monday. She urged people to maintain sustained awareness, discipline, and involvement in efforts aimed at restoring the river’s health.

Addressing an official programme, CM Gupta said the government alone cannot clean the Yamuna. She stressed that public cooperation plays a crucial role in protecting the river. The Chief Minister said a clean Yamuna would serve as a symbol of a clean Delhi and reflect the city’s environmental responsibility.

“The cleaning of the Yamuna is a people’s movement,” she said. “Only when citizens take ownership will we see real change.” She added that behavioural change at the household level is essential to reduce pollution.

CM Gupta said pollution in the Yamuna continues due to untreated sewage, industrial discharge, and plastic waste. She pointed out that careless dumping of garbage into drains and water bodies worsens the problem every day. She appealed to residents to stop throwing waste into drains and to follow waste segregation rules.

The Chief Minister said the government is strengthening sewage treatment infrastructure and tightening monitoring of industrial units along the river. Officials are also increasing inspections to prevent illegal discharge into the Yamuna.

She called on resident welfare associations, schools, and voluntary organisations to support cleanliness drives and awareness campaigns. According to her, community participation can significantly improve the effectiveness of government measures.

Environmental experts welcomed the Chief Minister’s remarks. They said sustained public involvement, combined with strict enforcement, is key to restoring the river. They also stressed the need for long-term commitment to conservation efforts.

Reiterating her appeal, CM Gupta said the cleaning of Yamuna movement must continue without interruption. She added that protecting the river is vital for Delhi’s ecological balance and future generations.
