Congress to Protest ‘Black Law’ on Rural Employment
The Congress party has announced a State-level consultation on December 29 to protest against the new legislation on rural employment, which it describes as a “black law” undermining the Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Act (MGNREGA). Party leaders claimed that the law threatens the livelihood of millions of rural workers by weakening provisions that ensure wage employment, social security, and rural development.
Addressing the media in Vijayawada, Congress leaders urged citizens, farmers, and workers to participate actively in the consultation and raise their voices against what they termed the BJP government’s “feudal policies.” They emphasised that MGNREGA has been a lifeline for rural households, providing guaranteed employment, income support, and a mechanism for community development.
The party vowed to mobilise public opinion and demand amendments to protect the rights and welfare of rural populations. Congress leaders said the consultation would serve as a platform to coordinate protests, discuss strategies, and ensure that rural employment schemes continue to empower the poor and strengthen the rural economy.
