Darbhanga International Airport is going to become Bihar’s first fully international airport. This decision marks a major step in improving air travel in the state. The key phrase Darbhanga International Airport reflects the importance of this upgrade. Many passengers in Bihar have waited for a long time for better global connectivity, and Darbhanga International Airport will finally bring that change.
Patna Airport only has customs status today. It needs customs and immigration officers for international operations, but both posts remain vacant. Because of this, Patna has international status only in name, not in full service.
Bihar already has 24 airports, and new greenfield airports are planned in Sultanganj, Bhagalpur, and Rajgir. A new airport is also under construction in Bihta near Patna. Still, Darbhanga will be the first complete international facility.
Earlier, Patna had flights only to Nepal, but they stopped after the 1999 IC-814 hijacking. Gaya Airport connects to countries like Japan, Thailand, and Sri Lanka, but it does not have official international status.
Darbhanga’s runway will also be extended from 2,743 meters to 3,657 meters. For this, 89.75 acres of land are being acquired. A logistics park is also planned near the airport to support future cargo operations.
