Fresh fighting broke out early Wednesday between Afghan and Pakistani forces along the Chaman–Spin Boldak border, killing and injuring dozens on both sides. The clashes began when heavy gunfire and shelling erupted across the frontier, quickly escalating into one of the deadliest battles in recent years.
The Afghan Taliban claimed they killed 58 Pakistani soldiers and destroyed several Pakistani military posts. Taliban spokesperson Zabihullah Mujahid said Pakistani forces attacked Spin Boldak district with heavy weapons, killing 12 civilians and injuring over 100 others. In response, Afghan troops struck back, seizing Pakistani weapons, tanks, and destroying several installations.
Pakistan gave a different version, accusing Afghan and Pakistani Taliban fighters of launching an unprovoked assault on its border post. Pakistani forces said they retaliated strongly, destroying Afghan tanks, military posts, and a Taliban training facility. Officials reported at least 23 Pakistani soldiers killed and more than 200 Afghan fighters dead.
This is the second border clash between the two countries this week. Tensions remain high as both sides blame each other for the violence. The fighting also comes during a sensitive time, coinciding with Taliban Foreign Minister Amir Khan Muttaqi’s visit to India.
