Delhi Chokes as Air Pollution Soars to 15 Times WHO Safe Limit

On the morning of October 21, 2025, Delhi woke up to dangerously toxic air, with pollution levels soaring to over 15 times the World Health Organization’s (WHO) safe limit. According to live data from Swiss air quality monitoring firm IQAir, Delhi ranked as the most polluted major city in the world, surpassing over 120 global cities.
The city’s Air Quality Index (AQI) entered the ‘severe’ category, with PM2.5 concentrations far exceeding permissible levels. A toxic mix of post-Diwali firecracker emissions, stubble burning from nearby states, and stagnant weather conditions contributed to the alarming spike.
Health experts have warned residents, especially vulnerable groups, to avoid outdoor exposure and use protective masks. The situation has once again spotlighted the urgent need for sustained policy action, regional cooperation, and stricter enforcement of air quality regulations as Delhi continues to battle its chronic air pollution crisis.
