“Delhi Govt Launches School Infrastructure Audit with Interns”

Interns conducting drone-based and digital survey in Delhi government schools

New Delhi: The Delhi government has launched a comprehensive infrastructure audit of its 1,086 government schools, with interns playing a key role in the initiative. The program is designed to provide hands-on field experience to undergraduate engineering students and class 12 graduates while strengthening the city’s school data systems.

Interns will conduct extensive field surveys using drones, 360-degree imaging, on-site inspections, and AI-based digital tools. They will create digital profiles for each school, documenting classrooms, toilets, electrical fittings, furniture, laboratories, sports equipment, and other assets. Each facility will be assessed and categorised as “good,” “minor repair,” “major repair,” or “replacement needed.”

In addition to documenting existing infrastructure, interns will assist engineers in safety and structural stability checks, employing non-destructive tests such as rebound hammer and ultrasonic pulse velocity tests. Buildings flagged as weak or needing major repairs will have their reports reviewed by technical institutions such as IITs and NITs, with recommendations for retrofitting, waterproofing, or selective demolition.

The collected data will be uploaded in real time to a dedicated web platform, which will feature GPS tagging, role-based access, and automated analytical reports. The system will benchmark infrastructure against CBSE and NDMA standards, enabling the government to prioritise repairs, plan upgrades, and improve safety standards.

Officials described the initiative as a first-of-its-kind effort to consolidate all government school infrastructure data, enhance planning and maintenance, and ensure safer, more resilient learning environments for students. Interns will also gain practical experience in surveying, digital data management, and engineering assessments, combining skill-building with public service.
