Delhi HC Rules Law Students Cannot Be Denied Exams Over Attendance

The Delhi High Court has ruled that no law student should be barred from appearing in examinations due to insufficient attendance. The court emphasized that academic regulations should not compromise students’ mental health or disrupt their educational progress. In its directive, the court asked the Bar Council of India (BCI) to conduct a comprehensive stakeholder consultation, involving student organizations, parents, and teachers, to frame clear guidelines on attendance requirements. The move aims to balance institutional regulations with the well-being and academic rights of law students. The court highlighted that denying students the opportunity to appear in exams could have long-term consequences on their careers and mental health. It urged the BCI to undertake this process expeditiously, ensuring that students are not unfairly penalized for attendance-related issues, and that their educational and professional prospects remain protected.
