Delhi High Court on Law School Attendance Norms
The Delhi High Court (DHC), in the case of Sushant Rohilla, ruled that students cannot be barred from exams or academic progression solely due to insufficient attendance. Law colleges cannot enforce rules stricter than those prescribed by the Bar Council of India (BCI). The BCI has been directed to review mandatory attendance norms for 3‑year and 5‑year LL.B. courses, taking into account blended and online learning methods. Colleges must also establish grievance redressal mechanisms, notify students and parents about attendance, and provide support such as extra classes to prevent distress caused by attendance policies. The judgment emphasizes flexibility and student welfare, ensuring attendance requirements do not become punitive while maintaining academic engagement.
