A tragic crime shook the city as a 27-year-old man was killed in a shocking incident now known as the Delhi Midnight Birthday Murder. The victim, Gagan, was shot dead in Delhi’s Shahdara district just minutes before he planned to celebrate his birthday at midnight.
Police say Gagan stepped out of his house to meet a friend when the attacker approached him. His father, Vinod Kumar, said Gagan hugged someone moments before the gunman fired a bullet into his head. The assailant then fired two more rounds in the air and fled. Gagan’s family rushed him to GTB Hospital, but doctors declared him dead. He leaves behind his wife and a 10-day-old son.
Senior officers from Shahdara, including the DCP and teams from Farsh Bazar and Shahdara police stations, reached the crime scene. Investigators reviewed CCTV footage and spoke to locals. They are working on several angles, including a dispute involving friends who took Gagan outside earlier that night. The murder has created fear and anger in the neighbourhood.
In another incident the same week, Delhi Police arrested a 20-year-old man for a deadly hit-and-run in West Delhi. The suspect, Sumit, was driving a Tata Tiago that mowed down two pedestrians—48-year-old painter Munni Raj and 74-year-old hawker Surajpal—at Jakhira Gol Chakkar. Police found the car abandoned at the spot. CCTV footage led them to the vehicle’s owner in Sonipat, who confirmed his son was driving.
Officers booked Sumit under several sections including rash driving and negligent death. They also added Motor Vehicles Act charges because he had no licence or insurance. The investigation continues.
