New Delhi, January 2, 2026: Dense fog Delhi cold wave conditions gripped the national capital on Friday morning as cold day weather continued, according to the India Meteorological Department (IMD). Low visibility disrupted normal movement, while chilly winds added to winter discomfort.
As per IMD data, Safdarjung recorded a minimum temperature of 9.1°C. Palam and Lodhi Road reported similar readings of 9°C each. Ridge saw 8.7°C, while Ayanagar recorded the lowest at 8.1°C. These conditions reflect the ongoing dense fog Delhi cold wave pattern across the city.
The weather department said a cold wave may affect isolated areas from January 2 to January 5. IMD defines a cold wave when minimum temperatures fall 4.5°C to 6.5°C below normal levels. Cold day conditions occur when maximum temperatures dip sharply below average.
IMD also warned that dense to very dense fog may persist during night and morning hours. Day temperatures may hover around 18°C, offering little relief.
Meanwhile, air quality remained a concern. Delhi’s Air Quality Index stood at 302, placing it in the ‘very poor’ category. CPCB data showed 19 stations under ‘very poor’ and one under ‘severe’. NSIT Dwarka recorded the worst AQI at 423.
Authorities advised residents to limit outdoor exposure, especially during early hours.
