Digital Public Infrastructure Can Transform Power Sector

Digital Public Infrastructure can transform the power sector, says Ram Sewak Sharma, Chair of the India Energy Stack Task Force. Speaking at the 6th International Energy Conference & Exhibition 2025 in New Delhi, Sharma emphasized how DPI principles—scalability, interoperability, and open standards—can revolutionize energy distribution and management.

“Digital Public Infrastructure can transform the power sector,” Sharma repeated, drawing parallels with successful models like UPI and ONDC. He explained that just as digital platforms unified banking and commerce, similar frameworks could break silos in electricity distribution. Currently, each power discom uses its own software, leading to inefficiencies. Sharma proposed a unified digital channel to streamline operations and improve consumer experience.

He also highlighted the need for inclusivity. Both large producers like NTPC and small rooftop solar owners should participate seamlessly in the energy grid. Sharma believes DPI can enable this transformation by creating common components usable across the sector.

The session also addressed data privacy, cybersecurity, and the importance of public-private partnerships. Experts agreed that DPI could support India’s clean energy goals and make power access more democratic.
