The Election Commission of India (ECI) will deploy 470 Central Observers for the upcoming Bihar Assembly elections and by-elections in eight states. This step aims to strengthen electoral transparency and fairness.
The observers include 320 IAS officers, 60 IPS officers, and 90 officers from services such as IRS, IRAS, and ICAS. They will monitor elections in Bihar and bypolls in Jammu & Kashmir (Budgam, Nagrota), Rajasthan (Anta), Jharkhand (Ghatsila), Telangana (Jubilee Hills), Punjab (Tarn Taran), Mizoram (Dampa), and Odisha (Nuapada).
According to Article 324 of the Constitution and Section 20B of the Representation of the People Act, 1951, the observers will work under the supervision of the ECI. They will inspect electoral arrangements, address complaints, and report progress to the Commission.
Moreover, these observers will ensure that election rules are strictly followed. They will also oversee voter awareness campaigns and assess polling arrangements in all constituencies. Their reports will help improve election conduct and voter participation.
The ECI stressed that deploying these officers will enhance the credibility of the elections. Furthermore, it will ensure free, fair, and peaceful voting across all locations. The observers’ presence will also discourage malpractice and encourage transparent procedures.
This deployment reflects the ECI’s commitment to democracy. By assigning experienced officers, the Commission aims to guarantee smooth elections. The decision highlights the importance of impartial oversight in strengthening the electoral process.
