El Salvador will integrate Grok, the controversial AI chatbot from social platform X, into its public school system. President Nayib Bukele announced the plan with X and xAI chief Elon Musk, describing it as the world’s first nationwide AI-powered education program.
The initiative will support more than 5,000 public schools and reach over one million students. El Salvador and xAI will co-develop the system. Officials said the platform will adapt to each student’s education level and pace, including in remote rural areas. The country currently has more than 1.2 million public school students from kindergarten to high school.
Grok faces global scrutiny. French authorities are investigating the chatbot over alleged Holocaust-denying comments. Critics also flagged Grokipedia, Musk’s online encyclopedia, for thousands of questionable citations. The concerns add pressure as El Salvador prepares to introduce the tool to classrooms.
Bukele called the project a milestone for global education and said the nation aims to leapfrog traditional models through bold digital policy. Musk said the partnership could unlock new potential for AI-driven learning worldwide.
Bukele has pushed several high-profile technology initiatives. In 2021, he made bitcoin legal tender. Yet most Salvadorans have not adopted the cryptocurrency, according to data from the Central American University.
