Electoral Roll Controversy: SC Refuses Probe, Says Approach Election Commission

The Supreme Court on Monday dismissed a petition demanding a probe into alleged irregularities in the electoral rolls, as highlighted by Congress leader Rahul Gandhi. A Bench led by Justice Surya Kant stated that the petitioner was free to approach the Election Commission of India (ECI) for appropriate remedies. The plea had sought judicial intervention to investigate claims of voter data manipulation and discrepancies that could impact the fairness of upcoming elections. However, the Court maintained that such issues fall under the purview of the ECI, which is constitutionally empowered to handle electoral processes and grievances. The ruling underscores the judiciary’s reluctance to intervene in electoral matters unless there is substantial evidence of constitutional violations. With the Court’s direction, the focus now shifts to the ECI, which may face mounting pressure to respond to the allegations and ensure transparency in the electoral process.
