Emirates Faces Backlash Over Business Class Post Amid Sudan Arms Allegations

Emirates backlash Sudan arms allegations

Emirates Airline is under fire after posting a photo of its luxury A380 business class on X. The image showed lie-flat seats, minibars, and wide screens, captioned, “This is how we do Business,” with cloud and halo emojis.

The timing sparked anger online. Many people accused the airline’s home country, the UAE, of sending weapons to Sudan’s Rapid Support Forces (RSF). The RSF has been blamed for killings and violence in Darfur.

Social media users filled the comments with outrage and dark humor. One user wrote “#BoycottTheUAE” beside a video that seemed to show RSF fighters laughing on a battlefield. Another called the UAE “Arab Zionists.” Others posted heartbreaking images from Sudan’s war zones.

The Wall Street Journal reported that US intelligence tracked more weapon transfers from the UAE to the RSF after March. The group’s leader, Mohamed Hamdan Dagalo, known as Hemeti, is said to have business links in Dubai. Gold from RSF-held mines may also be smuggled there.

Sudan’s civil war began in April 2023. The country’s army and the RSF, once allies, turned against each other during a failed move toward democracy.
