Engineer Rashid seeks court nod to vote in V-P election on September 9. The Jammu and Kashmir MP from Baramulla has moved a Delhi court with this request.
Rashid asked the court to allow him to cast his vote in the Vice-Presidential election. He argued that his participation is crucial for representing the people of Jammu and Kashmir at the national level.
The MP had earlier secured custody parole between July 24 and August 4. That parole allowed him to attend the monsoon session of Parliament. His current plea seeks a similar relief, but only for the Vice-Presidential vote.
Additional Sessions Judge Chander Jit Singh will hear the case on Saturday, September 6, 2025. Court insiders said the order is likely the same day. Rashid’s legal team stressed that denying his request would weaken the democratic rights of his constituency.
The case has triggered political interest in Delhi and Srinagar. Supporters say Rashid is fighting not just for himself but also for the political voice of Jammu and Kashmir. Critics argue that such requests test the limits of judicial discretion.
The court’s decision will decide if Rashid can cast his vote. It may also create a precedent for lawmakers in custody seeking political participation.
