Entire SC Decision Making: CJI B.R. Gavai Highlights Collective Role

Chief Justice B.R. Gavai delivering his farewell speech at the Supreme Court

Chief Justice of India B.R. Gavai delivered a reflective farewell address on his last working day, emphasizing that “not just judges, but the entire Supreme Court (SC)” — including the Bar, registry, and staff — plays a vital role in judicial decision-making. He made the remarks during a ceremony organized by the Supreme Court Advocates-on-Record Association (SCAORA).

CJI Gavai highlighted that the judiciary functions as a collaborative institution. While judges are the final decision-makers, the registry, court staff, and members of the Bar contribute to drafting, reviewing, and implementing judgments. He stressed that this collective effort ensures transparency, efficiency, and accountability within the apex court.

In his speech, Gavai also called for closer engagement with the Supreme Court Bar Association (SCBA) and SCAORA on matters concerning judicial reforms and administration. He underscored the importance of including these professional bodies in discussions, reinforcing the concept of shared governance within the Supreme Court.

On a personal note, CJI Gavai reflected on his values and beliefs. A practicing Buddhist, he described himself as “truly secular” and expressed respect for all religions, including Hinduism, Islam, and Sikhism. He credited his inclusive worldview to his upbringing, particularly his father’s teachings and the influence of B.R. Ambedkar.

CJI Gavai’s farewell, marking his retirement on November 23, 2025, emphasized the need to uphold judicial independence, inclusivity, and democratic functioning. He encouraged future judges and staff to continue fostering collaboration and institutional integrity, ensuring that the Supreme Court remains a pillar of justice and fairness in India.
