Expert Panel Recommends Continuing Ban on Bike Taxis
An expert committee has recommended that the ban on bike taxis in Bengaluru should continue, citing multiple legal and safety concerns. The panel concluded that bike taxis violate provisions of the Motor Vehicles Act, as two-wheelers registered for private use cannot legally operate as commercial passenger vehicles.
Safety risks were highlighted as a major issue, with the committee noting that two-wheelers offer limited protection to both riders and passengers, increasing the likelihood of severe injuries in accidents. The experts also warned that allowing bike taxis could place additional strain on the city’s already overburdened transportation network, potentially worsening congestion and traffic management challenges.
The panel emphasized the need for clear regulatory frameworks before any reconsideration of bike taxi operations. Until then, it has advised the government to maintain the current ban to ensure compliance with the law and safeguard public safety in Bengaluru’s dense urban environment.
