Experts Advise Caution in Using Ozempic
The first session of The Hindu Lit for Life Dialogue in Bengaluru focused on the increasingly popular drug Ozempic, widely prescribed for diabetes but now often misused for weight loss. Medical experts emphasized that while Ozempic can be effective in managing blood sugar and supporting weight reduction, it must be used strictly under medical supervision.
Doctors cautioned against self-medication, noting that unsupervised use can lead to serious side effects, including gastrointestinal issues, nutrient deficiencies, and in rare cases, cardiovascular complications. They stressed the importance of dosage regulation, monitoring, and combining the drug with proper diet and exercise.
The discussion also explored the societal trend of using such medications for cosmetic weight loss rather than therapeutic purposes, warning that the hype around “quick fixes” can overshadow health risks. Experts urged patients to prioritize long-term lifestyle changes over short-term drug-driven results and to seek professional guidance before starting Ozempic.
