Explained | Why Telangana Is Experiencing an Unusual Cold Wave

Telangana has been experiencing an unusual cold wave due to the presence of dry continental air masses over the region, meteorological officials explain. Normally, winter cold in the State is moderated by moisture from the Bay of Bengal. However, in recent weeks, northerly and north-easterly winds have carried dry, cold air from northern India, leading to a sharp drop in minimum temperatures, especially during the night and early morning hours. Clear skies and low humidity have further intensified cooling through rapid heat loss after sunset. Several districts have recorded temperatures well below normal, affecting daily life, agriculture and health, particularly among vulnerable populations. According to weather experts, the cold wave conditions are likely to ease gradually in the coming days as wind patterns change and moisture levels increase. A slight rise in night temperatures is expected once easterly winds return, bringing relief from the persistent chill across Telangana.
