Dr Nisar ul Hassan, a former Assistant Professor of Medicine at Srinagar’s SMHS Hospital, faces renewed scrutiny after investigators linked him to the Faridabad terror conspiracy involving a “white-collar” Jaish-e-Mohammed module tied to the Red Fort blast case. Authorities had dismissed Dr Nisar from government service in November 2023 under Article 311(2)(c), citing “anti-national credentials.”
A resident of Achabal in Sopore, Dr Nisar completed his MBBS in 1991 and his MD in 2001. His outspoken views and activism in the Doctors Association of Kashmir often clashed with governments. In 2013, he led a strike after the spurious drugs scandal, a move that drew support from separatist groups. In 2014, the Omar Abdullah administration suspended him for urging government staff to boycott election duties and taxes. He spent four years under suspension before returning to service in 2018.
Investigators are now examining his professional ties with Dr Mohammad Umar Nabi, the alleged mastermind of the Faridabad module. Umar worked under Dr Nisar for more than a year at Al Falah University.
Dr Nisar’s wife, Dr Suraiya, rejected claims that he absconded. She said the NIA detained him for questioning along with several university staff and students.
