They alerted the Chandaka Forest Division, prompting quick medical intervention.

A five-member veterinary team from Nandankanan and a four-member team from OUAT reached the spot and began emergency treatment. They administered fluids, medicines, and supportive care, but the animal showed no improvement. Officials suspect a possible herpesvirus infection, known for causing sudden health deterioration in elephants.

The Chandaka DFO confirmed that a post-mortem examination will take place on Saturday to determine the exact cause of death. Wildlife experts believe early diagnosis, faster reporting, and better monitoring may help prevent similar losses.

Forest authorities urged the public to report distressed animals immediately so rescue teams can respond faster. Conservationists say the case highlights the growing disease threat to India’s wild elephant population.
