Leaders Unsettled as 27 Municipalities Merged into GHMC

GHMC Municipality Merger Issue creates unrest among leaders and officials as powers shrink and competition tightens.

Political leaders and their followers in Rajendranagar have slipped into deep frustration. The government recently merged 27 surrounding municipalities into the GHMC. Until now, the constituency had Rajendranagar Circle along with the Shamshabad, Narsingi, and Manikonda municipalities, plus Bandlaguda Municipal Corporation. These bodies had nearly 85 councillors and corporators. Local leaders stayed active in public spaces and promoted development works. That situation is expected to change completely.

The merged areas are likely to get around eight new corporator divisions. Only a limited number of candidates may contest from each major party. With almost 13 divisions expected in the Rajendranagar region, only 60 to 70 contestants may enter the race. Earlier, nearly 300 aspirants contested in separate municipal bodies. Leaders are upset as their political space is shrinking. Many are confused about future GHMC elections because clarity on reservations has not arrived.

Even ruling party leaders are displeased with the merger. They fear that public dissatisfaction may rise due to increased taxes and fewer local services. Opposition leaders argue that development will slow down. They believe local governance will move further away from citizens.

Officials also expressed concern after losing key administrative powers. Municipal commissioners earlier held strong authority. Now, deputy commissioners may face reduced control. The merger has created distress across political and administrative circles.
