The gold smuggling racket busted in Mumbai has uncovered a large illegal gold trade network. The Directorate of Revenue Intelligence (DRI) seized gold worth Rs 15.05 crore and arrested 11 people, including the mastermind, during multiple raids in the city.

After receiving a tip-off, DRI teams searched four spots on Monday — two illegal melting units and two unregistered shops. Officers discovered a working furnace where smugglers melted foreign gold and shaped it into bars and wax. The gold smuggling racket busted in Mumbai exposed a well-planned effort to sell gold in the grey market and dodge taxes.

Investigators recovered 11.88 kg of 24-carat gold and 8.72 kg of silver worth Rs 13.17 lakh. Follow-up raids helped the teams arrest 11 people, including the main suspect, his father, a manager, four melters, an accountant, and three delivery agents.

The DRI said the main accused had a past record of smuggling. All 11 suspects appeared in court and were sent to judicial custody. Officials believe this operation shows a strong move against gold smuggling groups and strengthens efforts to curb illegal trade in Mumbai.
