Google Phone App Gets Material 3 Redesign to Fix Call Issues

Many smartphone users have recently noticed that the familiar old call interface is no longer visible. This change is due to Google rolling out the Material 3 Expressive Redesign for its Phone app.

The update was introduced mainly to solve a long-standing issue with the previous design. In the old interface, users often faced accidental touches while pulling their phone out of their pocket. This led to unintended actions such as calls being answered or declined without intention.

To address this problem, Google has shifted to a cleaner and more practical design. The new interface focuses on usability and reduces the chances of accidental swipes. Instead of relying heavily on swiping gestures, it introduces a more reliable option.

For those who are not comfortable with the swipe method, there’s an easy fix available. By going to Call Settings → Incoming Call Gestures, users can choose the “Single Tap” option. With this enabled, answering or declining calls becomes simpler, more intentional, and far less prone to mistakes.
