Government Forms Panel to Tackle ‘Digital Arrests’ After ₹3,000 Crore Fraud

The Union government on Monday informed the Supreme Court that an inter-departmental panel has been formed to combat “digital arrests” in real time. According to a note submitted in the court, the panel has already engaged with online intermediaries and social media platforms to strengthen monitoring, reporting, and preventive mechanisms against digital frauds.
The government highlighted that, based on complaints registered under the digital arrests category alone, fraudsters have scammed victims of approximately ₹3,000 crore. Officials noted that rapid action, better coordination between departments, and technological interventions are crucial to curbing such cybercrimes, which have grown in scale and sophistication.
The panel will work closely with law enforcement agencies, banks, and technology platforms to track fraudulent transactions, block suspicious accounts, and raise public awareness. Legal experts said the move reflects a proactive approach by authorities to protect citizens from online financial exploitation and to ensure swift redressal for victims of digital fraud.
