Greenland Sovereignty Defended as Trump Sparks Annexation Fears

Greenland

Several European leaders have issued a joint statement defending Greenland’s sovereignty after comments by U.S. President Donald Trump. The statement said Greenland belongs to its people alone. It stressed that decisions about Greenland rest only with Denmark and Greenland.

Leaders from France, Germany, Italy, Poland, Spain, and the United Kingdom joined Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen. They responded to Trump’s remarks about annexing Greenland. Greenland is a self-governing territory within the Kingdom of Denmark and part of the NATO alliance.

Frederiksen said Trump’s comments should be taken seriously. She warned that any U.S. attack on a NATO country would halt all cooperation. She said this would include NATO itself and the security structure built since World War Two.

The White House dismissed concerns of military conflict. Deputy Chief of Staff Stephen Miller said no country would fight the United States over Greenland’s future. He said Trump believes Greenland should fall under U.S. security control. Trump argued that Greenland is vital for national security. He claimed China and Russia are expanding their Arctic presence. He said Denmark cannot protect the territory alone. His remarks deepened fears of possible U.S. intervention.

Greenland’s strategic location and rich mineral resources have increased its global importance. Climate change and shifting trade routes have further raised international interest.
