Gujarat Researchers Develop Gut-Friendly Prebiotic from Citrus Peel
In a breakthrough for gut health, researchers at Gujarat Biotechnology University (GBU) have developed a natural prebiotic supplement using the peel of Kinnow Mandarin, a citrus fruit. The team has filed a provisional patent for the supplement, which is designed to promote the growth of beneficial gut bacteria. Unlike probiotics, which introduce live bacteria, prebiotics act as food for existing good microbes in the digestive system.
The Kinnow peel, often discarded as waste, is rich in dietary fiber and bioactive compounds. Researchers extracted these components to create a supplement that supports digestive health, boosts immunity, and may even improve nutrient absorption. The innovation not only adds value to agricultural by-products but also offers a sustainable approach to health supplements.
GBU’s development reflects a growing interest in natural, plant-based solutions for wellness, especially as awareness about the importance of gut health continues to rise. Clinical trials are expected in the next phase.
